abaca
This is nature's strongest fiber.
The Abaca fiber in our PYRATEX® musa 1, a fabric developed in collaboration with NEMUSA, comes from a species of banana tree which grows naturally in the Philippines. While bananas produce edible fruits, abaca trees’ fruit can’t be eaten, and the fibers are obtained from leaf sheaths surrounding the plant’s trunk.
This wildly grown plant is often collected by small groups of local farmers. It is sturdy and self- sufficient, requiring no pesticides or extra water to grow.
The fiber itself is compostable and biodegradable. One of Abaca's most important properties is its high tensile strength: it is very long lasting, and is considered a very strong fiber compared to others.
